UPS Selection Guide for Business Equipment
Choose the best uninterruptible power supply for your requirements by comparing load, topology, electrical connections, installation space and runtime.
There is no single best UPS for every load
The best UPS battery backup for a project depends on the protected equipment, power conditions, operating duration and space. Start with measured or documented load demand instead of a universal brand ranking.
What does an uninterruptible power supply do?
A UPS supports connected equipment during a mains interruption using stored battery energy. Depending on its topology and operating mode, it can also regulate or condition the supply. It is different from the power supply unit inside a computer, and its backup duration depends on the load and battery configuration.
Compare online and line-interactive UPS
Standby (offline) UPS systems transfer the load to battery when the supply falls outside their operating limits. Line-interactive UPS systems add voltage regulation within a specified range. Online double-conversion UPS systems convert power through a rectifier and inverter in normal double-conversion operation. Transfer and bypass behavior still depend on the selected model and mode.
Online double-conversion and line-interactive describe power topology. Modular describes construction, while rack mount and tower describe installation. These terms can overlap. Compare online UPS, line-interactive UPS and modular UPS using the selected model’s specifications.
Check both VA and W ratings
Add the demand of all protected devices, allow for documented startup behavior and identify future additions. The UPS must satisfy both its apparent-power rating in VA and real-power rating in W. A 10 kVA UPS is not necessarily rated for 10 kW.
Compare UPS power ratings and models. Eaton’s UPS sizing guide provides manufacturer guidance on load and runtime selection.
Confirm supply, mounting and communication
Record input/output voltage, frequency, phase, connector types and any bypass requirement. For rack equipment, include cabinet depth, available U-space, rails and cable clearance. Confirm the shutdown or monitoring interface required by the equipment.
Specify runtime separately from output power
The UPS power rating establishes how much load it can support; battery configuration and operating demand determine runtime. Use the battery and runtime guide to prepare the backup-time requirement.
Check related power and cooling equipment
A transfer switch needs two suitable sources and does not replace stored battery energy. Precision cooling selection requires heat-load and room information, separate from the UPS output rating.
